How to freeze cookie dough

February 5, 2013

I know this may not be a new or overly brilliant idea … I first saw it on Pintrest (as most things seem to first exist there don’t they?), but have used it over and over and over and guess what?  EVERY single time I do, it’s awesome.  Alright, let’s get on with the post and I’ll tell you why it makes me feel awesome!

How to Freeze Cookie Dough

First, make up your favorite cookie dough.  We love this Chocolate Chip cookie recipe from Kate at Our Best Bites.  We’ve also used their Peanut Butter Sandwich cookie recipe.

Next, you’ll want to grab your cookie sheet and either line it with wax paper or spray with cookie spray.  Then scoop the cookies onto the sheet.  You can see how mine are super close together … we aren’t cooking them, we’re just going to flash freeze them.  This allows for the individual scoops to freeze without them sticking together in a bag.  This doesn’t take that long.  Maybe an hour.  I’ve totally forgotten about them before (can you imagine … lol), and they kind of got freezer burn.  Not so great for dough eating, but still fine for cookies.

Once they are frozen, grab some bags, and put them in.  We gave these as neighbor gifts this past December, and it was so fun.  I said something along the lines of, “We thought you could use a little more dough this season.  Merry Christmas!”  We probably found it on Pintrest too.  🙂

Here is where you find out why I’m super mom!!!  On days I remember, that are special, or we have friends coming over for snack time … I just grab some cookie dough from the freezer, pop it in the oven (I bake mine exactly the same as when they aren’t frozen.  I never need extra time, although depending on your oven, you may), and Whala!  Instant fresh baked cookies without the hassle (read dishes) of making the dough!!  My kids are thrilled they get fresh cookies, and I’m thrilled that I don’t have a huge mess in the sink.  It’s also great if you do like to eat dough … in case you need a little bit here and there.  😉
I let these two help me today.  Oh boy, remember how I said I didn’t really love messes (like, at all!), and so to have a 2 and 3 year old helping … it’s VERY directed helping.  They still had a lot of fun though.  I’m that mom that gives my kids a scoop of raw cookie dough.

You are THAT mom cuz YOUR mom never hesitated to give you cookie dough… maybe eggs are different now, but you all sure enjoyed it and your little ones are too 🙂 And this is a great tip! Only problem I have is snacking on the frozen dough! Thanks, Sassy!

That’s fun. My mom ALWAYS had cookie dough in the freezer when I was a kid. I agree with your mom, though. I don’t think I can keep the dough long enough to freeze it. We just eat it all too fast…

We really did eat a lot of it the first time I did it, but then would just forget about it after that and finally I just leave it alone most of the time, or if I want one, I pull one out, and then bake the rest. Either way, as long as you don’t eat too many at a time, it’s fun to have around, lol.

We have done this for years and I love it. Sometimes I will just triple a recipe when I make it and cook one batch and freeze the other too to munch on as frozen dough or have for quick treats for things. So simple and yummy. I love eating them frozen!
