3 Month Food Supply Series Part 1A while back I put together a 72 Hour Kit Mini Series, and it was so much fun.  It was great to sit down and really figure it all out and have it all together for my family, and for your families!  I hope if you haven’t seen it yet, you’ll take the time to check out what it’s all about. While doing that series, I decided I wanted to put together a 3 Month Food Supply list as well.  I know, that sounds crazy!

Three months supply of food?  What in the what?  Think about it … there is a hurricane, tornado, freezing rain, crazy snow storm, earthquake … these aren’t thing that we hear about far and few in between when listening to the news.  I think we’ve all at least heard, if not experienced for ourselves crazy weather that has made it difficult to get to the store and gather food that we need in case we’re stuck in our house. The basic idea of a 3 Month Food Supply is that you basically have stock of the every day things that your family is already eating.  It’s not having crazy random things stored in your house for years on end that’ll go bad.  It’s not over stocking on cream soup that you’ll never use.  It’s gathering the basics slowly, but in a way that’ll allow your budget to not go insane.

My wonderful friend put together a 12 month shopping list for a whole bunch of basic foods and how much you’d need for 1 person/3 months. The list has been slightly revised from the 12 month shopping list at Prepared LDS Family.  This site has some amazing ideas/insight/helpful hints if you’re looking for more.

Here is a sample of one of the lists you’d get in the printable.  The month, item, and amount for 1 adult.  Obviously you can alter any of the items your family doesn’t eat/like.

March 3 Month (per person)
Tomato Sauce 18 8 oz can
Tomato Paste 6 6 oz can
Tomatoes, various 6 15 oz can
Salsa 1 jar
Pastas, dry various 4 lbs
Macaroni & Cheese 2 boxes
Spaghettios or Raviolis 2 cans
Ramen Noodle Soup 12 packages

For every child, you do about 1/2 of the adult serving.  For our family of 8 (6 kids 8 and younger), we did enough for 5 adults.  At least for now.  🙂  Part 2 of this mini series will include how to keep your 3 Month Food Supply up to date in an EASY way so that you’re not always searching to figure out what you’ve used/have/need, etc. You’ll notice that it also includes a year supply list also.  If your budget allowed once you got your 3 month food supply down you could work more on your one year supply.
