Accepting Compliments

October 25, 2013

Have you ever been in that moment, where someone gives you a compliment and you’re not sure what to say, so you say nothing?  Or what about when you know it’s true, but you don’t want to come across as prideful, or full of yourself, or whatever.

I had a friend several years ago that taught me an awesome lesson.  Every single time she got a compliment, she would accept it graciously.  I was amazed.  She would politely say “thank you” or something else similar.  Do you have a friend like that?  Are you like that?

Why is accepting compliments so hard to do along with just appreciate for face value?  Why do so many people have such a hard time saying “Thank you” when someone else tells us that we look nice, or that they like something about us, or that we’re wearing, or even that we’re a great parent/friend/neighbor.

I have tried to be like my friend.  I genuinely try to be grateful when someone says wonderful things to me!  I feel like when I do that, I can give other people compliments more easily, freely, and genuinely.  It’s awesome.  It’s amazing how hearing someone else’s kind words and really soaking them up, can help me put myself out to other more.  It’s like being served (on a small scale) and having that desire to help others when they need it too.

I think as we do this, we also are able to teach others to do this.  For me, it’s more specifically my kids.  Help them to say “thank you” when kind words are given to them.  It’s not about being prideful, selfish, or anything like that.  It’s just about accepting what someone has given you.  🙂  It’s in word form instead of physical form.  That’s all.

Accepting Compliments

I have a challenge!  My challenge to you, if you struggle to really accept and appreciate compliments others give to you, then try so hard to jus
t say “thank you” when someone says kind words to you.  Then really let them soak in and decide that the kind words that you heard, are true, because, chance are, they really are true.  🙂  Just try accepting compliments and making them yours to have.

I just want to give a little shout out to all of you.  I was nominated as a top 50 DYI/Craft blogger on Voice Boks, and with all my awesome readers voting for me, I was able to be in the top 5!!  I’m so excited.  It’s such a fun award for my little blog to get.  So thank you so so much!!  You can check out the Top 10 DYI/Craft bloggers here.
