Gratitude Tree

November 4, 2013

I love having a gratitude tree this time of year!  I think it’s so great to remember the positive things around us since there always seem to be SO many negative things that are coming at us ALL the time.

Gratitude Tree

We’ve actually done other ways to do gratitude besides a tree in the past, however, this year, I knew I had to do it.  Know why??  Remember my spooky Halloween tree?  I decided we could bring some life to it by just cutting out some leaves in various colors/shapes, and writing what we were grateful for on the leaves and decorating our “spooky” tree, and it would all the sudden become a Gratitude Tree!  🙂  I cheated, BUT, the tree really is SO easy to make.

To make the tree, grab some construction paper, or card stock hanging around, that’s all you’ll need.  Just grab whatever color you want.  You’ll need probably 6 pieces (depending on how big you want your tree), and I just free handed it all.  Just make the base about as wide as the paper.  All you so is wavy cut, straight cut, etc and make it smaller as you get to the next paper.  For the branches, I cut about 10-14 out of each paper.  Then just use tape to put them up how I wanted to.

For the leaves, I cheated again (GASP!), and totally used my Silhouette Cameo … but this  could totally be a fun project for kids.  Just print off some leaf silhouette images and the kids can practice their cutting skills.

For the pocket, I just grabbed 2 papers.  On one of them, I just made a regular document with what I wanted it to say, then printed it landscape instead of portrait and then stapled that paper to the other paper.  The page with my words, obviously didn’t take up the entire paper since I wanted it to be a pocked.  Then I had a place for all the leaves.  With 7 people able to say what they’re thankful for in our family, I wanted a BIG pocket because we have a LOT of leaves.

You’ll also notice the Clicker that I have hanging there!  I’m LOVING this you guys.  Have you ever heard of Billion Clicks?  I found it several months ago.  One of my favorite singers, Hillary Weeks, founded it. I LOVE this idea, you guys!  Seriously LOVE it.

Here is the video that will tell you WHAT it is all about.  WATCH it!  This is life changing, I’m not even kidding!

I love the idea of empowering myself by positive thinking.  I’ve had such a hard time lately with this.  Since getting the clicker, I’ve been able to make such a better effort to think about the positive things that I have in my life.  Even if it’s something small, I’ve noticed that it causes a ripple effect.

I’ve also noticed that as I try to think more positively, my attitude totally changes!  I’m not even kidding.  If I’ve been having a hard time with one of the kids, I calm down more quickly, and I’m able to more clearly think about what I can do to help that child instead of being annoyed by whatever has happened.

My kids LOVE to  click.  So, I started something the other day.  It’s been a MIRACLE for kids arguing.  When my kids get in a tuff with each other we figure out what’s happened, and then I make them click FIVE times.  I make them think about 5 positive things, and guess what has happened EVERY time?  They are happier SO much faster!  It’s so hard to be unhappy when you are thinking positive!!!!  What we really need it more practice thinking positively!

Over at Billion Clicks they are trying to do just that.  Reach 1,000,000,000 clicks!  I am so excited to help them reach this goal, and my goal of being a better, more positive person, and helping my family do the same thing.  They’ve got some super fun things over there.  They have some free downloads with positive quotes, wallpaper and more.

What a cute idea to add the clicker to your lovely gratitude tree. I’ll be on the lookout for the Clicker.

We have a thankful tree and a thankful turkey we pull out and put feathers of gratitude on every year. I love this idea though.
