3 Family Easter Traditions

March 8, 2016

Do you have some favorite Easter Traditions?  3 Family Easter Traditions

Are there certain family Easter traditions you and your kids look forward to every year?  As time goes on, I find myself and my husband making more of an effort to bring Christ into Easter.

I’m so excited to share this amazing #hallelujah video.

We make more of an effort to make sure the Easter Bunny isn’t the focus.  The Easter Bunny actually comes on Saturday at our house.  The gifts left in the basket do have lots of fun candy – but the gift is always pointing to Christ.

I am so excited to share 3 Family Easter Traditions you can start this year that help bring your family closer to Christ.

How Can My Home Can Be a Holy Place?

March 3, 2016

Organize yourselves; prepared every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God. – Doctrine & Covenants 88:119

How can my home be a holy place printable by simplistically sassy

Is your house anything like mine?

The door open and closes (or stays open) off and on all afternoon as kids come in and out, and back in.  Feet running by me taking them to their destination with big plans in mind.  Laughter filling the air as siblings play, or yelling as they fight.

How can my home be a holy place when there is a varying within families of relationships?

There is a varying of attitudes, experiences, and personalities.  There always seems to be the underlying gift of love though.  No matter what happens, the love is there.  The desire to protect and watch over each other.  Sometimes that good desired is out weighted by the unrighteous desires of our hearts though.

What can we are parents do to bring that good in?  How can my home be a holy place when somedays there is so much contention?  We have to set that example, and we have to be acting the way we want to see our kids acting.  We should strive to be their best example.

I recently read  book entitled My Home Can Be a Holy Place, by Kristen M. Oaks. How Can My Home Be a Holy Place? By Simplistically Sassy

I loved it!  It was such an easy reminder of the small things that can make a difference.  It was a perfect book to enjoy for a Family Home Evening lesson with the kids.  We took this to heart, and included the points talked about in the book, and used them in Family Counsel to create a Family Mission Statement.

The best part of creating a Family Mission statement was that the kids were SO involved in it all.

We wanted them to have input, after all, they’re a huge part of this family too.  Part of our mission statement implements the ideas from My Home Can Be a Holy Place.  So, how can my home be a holy place?  Love.  Teach.  Be patient.  Listen.

I wanted to share what we created with you.  So, if you have hard times in your family getting along, finding peace, or remembering the Savior, you can hang this in your home as a reminder of how you’d like your house to be.

How to Resist Snacking

Hey friends! Are you ready to learn how to resist snacking?

How to resist Snacking

I find that resisting snacking is SO HARD!  The kids seem to always want a snack, and even if I’m not hungry, I’m looking.  Or the kids are finally all in bed, and all I want to do is watch TV and have a snack.  Just some peace and quiet and some good food that the kids don’t even know exists in the house.  We all have that stash right?

Today I’ve got a 3 tips that will help you resist snacking, and help in your weight loss.

#1: CHEW GUM!  Seriously you guys!  This WORKS!  The kids and I went to Target the other day (I don’t live super close to my Target, so when I go it’s like a dream of perfection.  Don’t you just love Target?  So much perfection in one little red store.) and as I was checking out I found this (plus here is an awesome coupon through Target Cartwheel for the new Extra® 35-stick pack):  Extra Gum

Do you SEE THAT?  No?  Let me get closer. Extra Gum

Now do you see why I’m so excited?  Friends, I go through 4-6 sticks of gum in ONE DAY sometimes.  Those times when I’m not actually hungry, but when I’m board and my mouth just thinks it needs to chew on something, I grab a stick of gum.  Extra® Gum Spearmint has THIRTY-FIVE sticks of gum. This makes my heart (and my mouth ) crazy happy.  Most gum packs come with far less than that.

I have to share one other things I’m loving about this gum.  Extra gum in the car

It doesn’t just come in a cardboard package.  It has this durable recycled plastic that holds the gum.  Hooray!!!

I throw my gum in my purse, and keep it in the car, and in the pantry.  Seriously, I honestly do.  It’s everywhere (clearly I’m always munchy).  The thing I HATE is pulling my gum out only to find that cracker crumbs have make their way into the wrapper of my gum, which was laying around in my bag because having 6 kids means that they are always grabbing and searching for the gum too.  Or whatever else they can find.  I hate when my gum package is open, and spilling.  THIS IS AWESOME!  It clicks closed, and I know my gum is safe and sound, and crumb free.

PS – There is so much of this gum, it’s easy to give a little.  Sometimes I hate sharing those last few pieces, but when there are SO many pieces it’s easy to share for sure.

#2: DRINK WATER FIRST:  Alright, so when you’ve recently eaten, and you’re feeling munchy, or you feel like you’re hungry, make sure to drink a big glass of water.  Wait about 15 minutes to see if you’re ready hungry, or just feeling like you want to chew on something.

Drink water

If you’re not really feeling that hungry, and still want something to do with your mouth, just grab a stick of gum.  I leave a package always in my pantry so when I’m grazing, I can see it easily, and just be reminded that I may not need food.  Loving that this Extra® Gum Spearmint 35-stick package just stands up nicely.

Extra Gum

#3: WHEN YOU EAT, EAT CLEAN!  If you’re going to eat something then make sure it’s good for you.  Good snacks always involve protein and can have a carb or a fat too.  It’s something that will fill you up and something that will get you to the next meal without having an in-between meal or something that you’ll regret eating.

How to Lose Weight Forever

February 20, 2016

Hey Friends!  Are you ready for this?!

In February of 2014, my youngest was 18 months old, and she was sleeping through the night.  I had no excuses any more.

I was done.  I was DONE!!

I was done feeling tired, and weak, and I was DONE feeling blah all the time.  I wanted to look in the mirror and see how I KNEW I actually was.  I wanted to be proud of myself.  I wanted to love what and who I saw.

Simplistically Sassy Before and After

I knew that I had to find myself.  I knew that if I could be who I wanted to be on the outside, I would be able to be the true me on the outside.  I KNEW that.

I could FEEL that in myself.

I saw my friends blog post about how she’d lost weight over the last year learning various habits, and eating REAL normal food that was at the grocery store.  That was a HUGE thing for me.  If I was going to go through a program, I NEEDED to shop at the grocery store.  I didn’t want to order food from the company, and I didn’t want to have that be an extra cost.  I have SEVEN other people to feed.  I wasn’t just going to change my lifestyle, it was going to be a family affair, at least to an extent.

When I first signed up to work with John through his Bod-E-Volv program, I was stoked.  One of the best lessons I learned from John was that it was going to take dedication, work, and it was NOT going to just be a downward slope on the scale.

You guys, it was HARD.  It was SO HARD!!

It still is hard!  But it’s been 1000% worth every moment, every up and down, and every new habit I’ve had to learn.  I still have a little ways to go, but that’s totally okay.  Know why?  Because I”m still trying.

Here are the 5 things that I did for over a year to lose body FAT (not just weight, but get rid of FAT), and to keep it off.  Anyone can do these things.  Any mother, wife, women, man, husband – we can all do these things!  Just remember that it’s HARD though.

You have to DEDICATE yourself to YOU.

You have to be willing to make time for yourself, and it’s hard.  It’s so so so worth it though.

Tiny Laundry Room Makeover

Tiny Laundry Room Makeover by Simplistically Sassy

I have a tiny laundry room.  It’s slightly bigger than a closet … but it’s tiny.  It’s also amazing in it’s shape.  Seriously though, it’s almost non-functional to some degree because of the shape.  It just had a boring shelf that was WAY too high for my five foot three inch self.  I could barely reach to get my detergent when it was on the very edge.  I really wanted to re-do it, but that takes time, and money, and planning.  It just wasn’t happening.

Then mid-December (of course right?  Right during the holiday’s), the washer started to smell like it was burning.  It’d happened before, I called a great repair guy.  He told me hopefully it’ll last a couple more years, but it may not.  If it started to smell again, I needed a new one.  Sigh.  So here we are, a week before Christmas, and apparently I was getting a new washer/dryer.  Which was great, but not really either.  My husband and I found ones that we liked (but mostly what I liked), and we got them.  They were being shipped to us, so we had a couple weeks.

Insert me deciding we were redoing the laundry room ASAP!  YAY!  First things first, we knocked out the too high shelf.  By we, I mean my amazing husband.  🙂  After the shelf was knocked down we put a 2×4 board up using a level, and screwed that into some studs.   My husband then fixed up the area where the shelf had come, and painted it all white to match the walls.Tiny Laundry Room Makeover by Simplistically Sassy

We were able to find two cabinets on a local classified website, that were the height we wanted.  I took some time to sand it down, and then painted it a light blue.  We decided to to paint the cupboards the color I wanted to incorporate into the room instead of painting the walls.  It saved us a lot of money since we had enough paint to do the cupboards, but would have had to buy more for the walls.  We screwed these into some studs as well, and having the 2×4 under the cupboards helped in holding it all up when it was being screwed in, and keeping them level.Tiny Laundry Room Makeover by Simplistically Sassy

Next we just needed to wait for our new washer and dryer to come.  I knew once they arrived I’d be able to finish up the details.  The first detail I KNEW I wanted was to print off some vinyl decals that were laundry signs.

I made these before we got the new appliances.  Once they were in place, I decided it’d be so fun to have the “Machine Wash” and “Tumble Dry” above the washer and dryer.  I love how they turned out.

The other decals that I made were put up on the wall as a boarder on a couple small walls.  I hope to make more at some point, but I LOVE how it looks.  Plus if I ever need help understanding how to wash my clothes, I’ve got some my own key in the laundry room.

I had a plain clock that may not even work … but I decided I could still use it.  I use paint to make little sunflowers on it, and then added a mason jar and some sunflowers that I used for my daughters Frozen Fever birthday party.     Tiny Laundry Room Makeover by Simplistically Sassy

I love how it all turned out.  It makes it so much nicer to do laundry when I love the room that I’m in.  It’s nice to be able to take the time to make a space nicer so that I can truly enjoy it better.  The best part is that we were able to do it on a small budget (besides the new washer and dryer, lol).  We spent around $150 for the cupboards, other wood, screws, pegs for shelves, and vinyl.

What room would you redecorate in your house if you could?

Just Let Go

Just Let Go Movie Review

A few years ago, I was so touched as I watched a Mormon Message about forgiveness.  I was moved to tears as I watched the absolute gut wrenching situation this family was put through.  Then, more tears and I watched as this man, who had so much taken from him, FORGAVE!  Go. Watch.  You’ll understand.  I watch that and I’m left with absolute desire to be better – in any and every way.

“Just Let Go” is a new movie that has come out that depicts the specific real events of Chris Williams and his family.

Henry Ian Cusick, Emmy Nominee, as Chris Williams in the true story “Just Let Go”. After surviving a drunk driving accident that killed his pregnant wife and two kids, Chris Williams struggles to ‘just let go’ and forgive the young man who caused it.

This movie was put together so beautifully.  It brought tears to my eyes.  It brought so much admiration to my heart as Chris is trying to do what is best for him, and for his boys.  It shows the heartache those boys went through as they lost their mother, and siblings.  It shows the anger that happens.  Healing is hard.  Healing is painful.  Healing is anguish.  Chris looked to his Savior through all of that healing.  He was able to just let go of it all because he was able to give it to his Savior.

As we begin the New Year, this message of forgiveness is an important reminder, that forgiveness can bring peace to your soul. “It has allowed a terrible tragedy … to be turned into, in many aspects, a tremendous blessing. That has been one of the most fascinating things to experience,” Williams said in a interview with the Deseret News. “To see the lives blessed since the crash, it has been overwhelming how many positive things have come from it.”

This year I hope that we can all take this amazing example of all the lives involved.  It’s HARD to let go of hard things.  We can all Just Let Go of hurtful, and painful things.  The ONLY way to truly do it is to let the Savior work through us.  To live so that His Spirit can be with us, and then let that Spirit lead and guide our lives.  I know that as we do that, our lives will be strengthened.  Our lives will be blessed.  Our burdens will be lighter.  Life will be hard, and trials will still come to us.  However, He will be there by our side to lead and guide.  He always is, and always will be.  He loves us. #justletgo
