Hey friends! Are you ready to learn how to resist snacking?

How to resist Snacking

I find that resisting snacking is SO HARD!  The kids seem to always want a snack, and even if I’m not hungry, I’m looking.  Or the kids are finally all in bed, and all I want to do is watch TV and have a snack.  Just some peace and quiet and some good food that the kids don’t even know exists in the house.  We all have that stash right?

Today I’ve got a 3 tips that will help you resist snacking, and help in your weight loss.

#1: CHEW GUM!  Seriously you guys!  This WORKS!  The kids and I went to Target the other day (I don’t live super close to my Target, so when I go it’s like a dream of perfection.  Don’t you just love Target?  So much perfection in one little red store.) and as I was checking out I found this (plus here is an awesome coupon through Target Cartwheel for the new Extra® 35-stick pack):  Extra Gum

Do you SEE THAT?  No?  Let me get closer. Extra Gum

Now do you see why I’m so excited?  Friends, I go through 4-6 sticks of gum in ONE DAY sometimes.  Those times when I’m not actually hungry, but when I’m board and my mouth just thinks it needs to chew on something, I grab a stick of gum.  Extra® Gum Spearmint has THIRTY-FIVE sticks of gum. This makes my heart (and my mouth ) crazy happy.  Most gum packs come with far less than that.

I have to share one other things I’m loving about this gum.  Extra gum in the car

It doesn’t just come in a cardboard package.  It has this durable recycled plastic that holds the gum.  Hooray!!!

I throw my gum in my purse, and keep it in the car, and in the pantry.  Seriously, I honestly do.  It’s everywhere (clearly I’m always munchy).  The thing I HATE is pulling my gum out only to find that cracker crumbs have make their way into the wrapper of my gum, which was laying around in my bag because having 6 kids means that they are always grabbing and searching for the gum too.  Or whatever else they can find.  I hate when my gum package is open, and spilling.  THIS IS AWESOME!  It clicks closed, and I know my gum is safe and sound, and crumb free.

PS – There is so much of this gum, it’s easy to give a little.  Sometimes I hate sharing those last few pieces, but when there are SO many pieces it’s easy to share for sure.

#2: DRINK WATER FIRST:  Alright, so when you’ve recently eaten, and you’re feeling munchy, or you feel like you’re hungry, make sure to drink a big glass of water.  Wait about 15 minutes to see if you’re ready hungry, or just feeling like you want to chew on something.

Drink water

If you’re not really feeling that hungry, and still want something to do with your mouth, just grab a stick of gum.  I leave a package always in my pantry so when I’m grazing, I can see it easily, and just be reminded that I may not need food.  Loving that this Extra® Gum Spearmint 35-stick package just stands up nicely.

Extra Gum

#3: WHEN YOU EAT, EAT CLEAN!  If you’re going to eat something then make sure it’s good for you.  Good snacks always involve protein and can have a carb or a fat too.  It’s something that will fill you up and something that will get you to the next meal without having an in-between meal or something that you’ll regret eating.

Witch and Goblin Halloween Treat

Holidays are magical with little kids.  I feel like Halloween is really the start of the holiday season, and getting the kids involved in activities and making goodies has become a MUST at our house.  The kids and I came up with an idea to make a pumpkin patch and I had a vision of what I wanted it to look like to make it even more festive.  These would be perfect as an after school activity with the kids, or even for a party!

The kids and I headed to Walmart to grab the necessities.  Here is what you’ll need to make Witch and Goblin Halloween treats:

The OREOs and Fanta were pretty easy to find.  Fanta was in the soft drink section.  There were cans I almost bought too, so the kids could make their own drink, but decided against that.  But that might be a perfect solution for a party.
Fanta-display

The OREOs were actually right as I walked into the store.  However, I found some more right with the Halloween candy!  So make sure to check there.

Witches Graveyard:

*OREO glow in the dark package (these come as packages of 2 OREOs, which I LOVE because then I just gave each of the kids a package, and they could help make 2 at a time, and it wasn’t overwhelming – plus they glow in the DARK!  They were in love with that.).
*Green Chocolate Melt
*Pumpkin candies
*Witch cupcake toppersOREO Graveyard

  1. First you’ll want to hold the OREO package up to the light, then take it into a dark room, and see how awesome it is when they glow in the dark.  After seeing how great it is, get ready for a graveyard.  😉  Here is the package that has the 2 OREOs in it.  I held it to the light.OReo

Like MAGIC … it was glowing SO well!  These would be so fun to pass out on Halloween.  They’re just fun to stand in your pantry with and admire too.  Lol.Glowing-Oreo

  • You’ll want to cut some pumpkin candies in half and make sure those are ready first.
  • Melt the chocolate 30 seconds at a time, or just by following the package directions.
  • Once the chocolate is melted you’ll take your OREO and dip the top of the OREO into the melted chocolate.
  • While the chocolate is still wet, you can place a pumpkin in the middle.Pumpkin-Patch
  • To create a witch crashing a pumpkin, put half a pumpkin on the dipped cookie, then the witch, then the other half of the pumpkin.  The pumpkin will act as book ends to keep the witch in place.Witch-by-kids
  • Let chocolate harden and cool, then enjoy!  Witch-Crash-kids
  • Always make sure to appreciate the imperfections too.  🙂  My kids loved it and were so proud of their creations even though they weren’t perfect.  That’s what makes it awesome!Witch-Kids-Crash

Goblin Freeze and Juice:

*Fanta Orange Soda
*Vanilla ice cream
*Straws/spoons & cupsGoblin-Juice-Recipe

Goblin Freeze:

  1. Pour Fanta Orange soda into an ice cream maker for 20 minutes.  The amount will depend on how big your ice cream maker is.
  2. Once the Fanta Orange soda is starting to resemble a freeze drink, alternate scooping vanilla ice cream, and the Fanta into the cup.

Goblin Juice:

  1. Fill cup about half way with Fanta Orange Soda.
  2. Scoop 2 medium sized scoops of vanilla ice cream into the cup.
  3. Take a large spoon, and smash the ice cream around until it’s almost melted, or just falling apart.
  4. It should be thicker than the soda with melted ice cream, it should be the consistency of soft serve ice cream.  So add a little ice cream or Fanta, depending on your drink.Witch Graveyard and

The kids and I drank this all up!  It was super yummy!  I didn’t get any pictures of it because we were too busy drinking away … lol.  It’s so fun and easy, and slightly different than a typical float, which makes it fun for a Halloween party and just a fun and different snack!

What are your families favorite #spookysnacks for Halloween?  Need some ideas?!?  Come check out some more here.

Make sure to check out Evette Rios, host of the CBS show Recipe Rehab, she will be creating a custom Walmart-exclusive recipe that uses both Fanta and OREO.  It will be shown on the #SpookySnacks social hub. It’s always fun to get new holiday treat ideas!

Fun Family Activities

We decided a while back that we were going to take our Friday nights back a little while ago.  We were going to schedule that time for our family.  We would either make or pick up pizza (depending on the day and if I actually remember to make it), and then watch a movie.

Sometimes we like to mix it up and so something a little different.  We play games, or make a fun treat.  The other day the girls and I were at Walmart (I think we go there at least once a week, lol), and we saw they had The Boxtrolls movie.  We decided it’d be a fun new movie to grab and watch.  I knew for sure my older kids were going to love it.  We also couldn’t pass up on the great deal Walmart had on the 10 pack Pop-Secret Homestyle popcorn.  (Side note: This popcorn is AMAZING.  I don’t really love over buttered popcorn, and this is perfect.  Slight butter/salt, and not over doing it at ALL!  It was perfect for our fun little treat for the evening.)

The Boxtrolls and Pop-Secret

We wanted to have a fun treat for the middle of the movie.  So, I grabbed one of the 10 pack Pop-Secret popcorns, and got that all popped up.  Then, I decided that it’d be super fun to just grab whatever random thing we had around and let the kids create their own popcorn treat.  I thought this went along PERFECTLY with the movie.  The Boxtrolls often find things and make something new with them.  We had a variety of chocolate chips, red hots, gummy hots, pretzels and sprinkles.  The kids loved it!  It was a little Popcorn Bar that was such a fun thing for the kids to pick and chose what they wanted.

Pop Secret Popcorn Bar

Fun and easy creations were made from this fun Popcorn Bar.  Loving this idea.  We’ll be doing it again!

Pop Secret Popcorn Bar Treat

The Boxtrolls is such a fun movie.  It’s so fun to see the amazing claymation that is done, and the story line is fun, and I think it has a great lesson.  I thought it’d be super fun to grab some clay, and have the kids pick their favorite character or part from the movie and re-create them with their own clay.  Then we went ahead and baked them up.  It was SO fun.  The kids LOVED it.  The best part of all?  It wasn’t a huge messy project (if you’ve been reading my blog, you know how much I hate big messy projects from this post).

Family Fun with Clay

We loved mixing this up and really spending time together creating something new.  I am so excited to let the kids play with clay again, and create.  I loved seeing what they chose to make from the movie too.  It was fun to see the character they wanted to make.  Fun family Night Activities by Simplistically Sassy

I love this weekly time we carve out for our kids.  Life is crazy and busy and we’re running here and there, and rushing off to bed to make sure everyone gets enough sleep, etc.  Friday nights are our nights.  I think if you just really want the time, you can make the time.  You can create fun memories, and just sitting together for a movie allows kids to sit with you, and have your attention and interest on something that they like.

The Boxtrolls is a great family time movie.  Try doing your own family night.  Grab The Boxtrolls from Walmart (while supplies last) and some 10 Pack Pop-Secret Homestyle Popcorn.  Make it a night, and get creative.  Have some fun and just ENJOY being together!!!  It’s worth changing things up.

The BEST Super Chocolate Smoothie

The Best Super Chocolate Smoothie by Simplistically Sassy

I love chocolate milkshakes, like a lot!  I’ve been trying to eat better (although, I do indulge in a little ice cream popsicles sometimes, lol).  I love having smoothies in the morning, and I really wanted to find a really good chocolate smoothie recipe that was healthy.  Well, I found one.  Although, it didn’t have everything I wanted, so I went ahead and made a few changes.  So, now you all get the best super chocolate smoothie recipe!

I try to incorporate vegetables, and protein more often in all of my meals.  In a smoothie, it’s fun to add a healthy fat (in this case it’s the natural peanut butter, although you could use another nut butter), and for sweetness I use a little honey, and a banana.  Then of course, I use the cocoa powder for the chocolate flavor.  It’s perfection – or it’s just the best super chocolate smoothie ever! The Best Super Chocolate Smoothie by Simplistically Sassy

It’s so easy of course.  You just grab all the ingredients and throw them in your blends, and let the blender do all the work for you.  The Best Super Chocolate Smoothie by Simplistically Sassy

Just like that you’ve got the best super chocolate smoothie.  It’s a fulfilling meal that is great as a snack during that dreaded afternoon witching hour, or as a meal.  Love this one!

Simple Summer Snacks by Simplistically Sassy

Last week my older kids came home from school for the last time this school year.  I couldn’t believe they were done.  My kindergartener had been done for a week, and I had prepped myself all week to have all six kids back home.  See, I am SO excited to have the kids around.  I’m excited to do whatever we want, I’m excited to do fun things we’ve decided we want to make sure to, etc.  However, I’m not excited for the resistance in helping around the house, or pulling weeds, or the fighting.  I hope it isn’t the death of me this summer.  Anyone else have a love/hate relationship with summer vacation??   I wanted to make their first day out super fun.  I let each of the kids invite a friend over, and got some great simple summer snacks that would be filling and delicious for the kids.  Both are important as most days when I have all the kids home they’re endless pits that are always asking for food. The kids had a blast.  While I was getting their snacks ready, the boys had a water fight, the girls chatted, the littles just ran around, went down the slide, and followed the bigger kids.  It felt like summer!Simple Summer Fun By Simplistically Sassy

I grabbed some Pepperoni Hot Pockets in the freezer section at Walmart earlier that week.  They’re with other frozen pizza products, but I love the individualized packaging.  Then I can make one, or I can make 12.  So perfect for #SummerGoodies, depending on how many kids are hungry for pizza in that snack attack moment.  We also grabbed some awesome fruit bars in the freezer section, but we’ll get to those in a minute. I heated up a bunch of Pepperoni Hot Pockets, and I filled a bowl with carrots and cut up a cantaloupe and put them all out on a platter so the kids could have a grab and go simple summer snack as they played.Simple Summer Snacks Hot Pocket by Simplistically Sassy

The kids loved the Hot Pockets.  They’ve got full sized pepperoni pieces and real cheese in them (thank goodness for protein in snacks!).  They end up perfectly cooked, and so filling.Simple Summer Snacks by Simplistically Sassy

I loved watching these little girls eat their pizza up.  So adorable.Simple Summer Snacks Hot Pocket by Simplistically Sassy

We let everyone finish and run around a bit longer before we pulled out the frozen fruit bars for a cool snack.  The kids saw that I’d gotten Dryers Outshine Fruit Bars when I went shopping at Walmart earlier in the week and were DYING to try these #SummerGoodies.  We got a bunch of different flavors.  Simple Summer Snacks Dyers by Simplistically Sassy

The most popular was the Strawberry Rhubarb and Coconut Cream.  These are awesome fruit bars that are made with real fruit and fruit juice.  I loved that these ones have veggies too!  Hello awesome!  🙂  We also tried out the Coconut and the Lime flavored bars and those were AWESOME.  The coconut makes me feel like I’m back on vacation … without the quiet.  🙂Simple Summer Snacks by Simplistically Sassy

Hello simple summer snacks that are ready in less than 5 minutes!  We’re glad to meet you for these endless pits that will be here for weeks on end.  We can’t wait to play water games, play with friends, and hang out all summer long.

What do you look forward to doing with your kids during Summer Break?

Let kids pack their lunch

February 7, 2014

Have you ever let kids pack their lunch for school?  It can be so helpful if you’re used to packing kids lunches getting them fed, dressed, backpacks all filled with papers, books, homework, etc.  Have a lunch caddy in the fridge and pantry can simplify this process SO much!  It’s such a simple idea that you can just let kids pack their lunch while you get other things organized.

Let kids pack lunch

It’s so easy to let kids pack their lunch, I love it. Just grabbing a caddy, and then smaller containers or bags, and filling them (the kids could even help with this too!) with things the kids can just grab, put in their lunch bags, and then they’re good to go!  How simple, and awesome!  I love any opportunity that I can give my kids to learn how to do tasks and help around the house.
