Truths Most Worth Knowing Review

October 12, 2015

I am excited to have been invited to participate in some reviews for Shadow Mountain Publishing and Deseret Book.

Truths Most Worth Knowing-1

Boyd K Packer of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles passed away, and days later this book was released to stores.  It was incredible timing that gave me chills when I heard.  President Packer was one apostle that I loved to hear speak, and read his talks.  He was gentle and firm all at the same time.  He didn’t hold back, but helped remind us that the Savior was there for us.

This book is so heart warming.  As I read through some of the words that President Packer had spoken I could hear his voice.  President Packer shares his witness over and over of the truthfulness of the gospel.  As I read his testimony and witness of Jesus Christ I couldn’t help but feel the Spirit near me testifying that he was indeed an Apostle of God who had been called of God.

I loved this quote: “The mist of darkness will cover you at times so much that you will note be able to see your way even a short distance ahead.  But you can feel your way.  Grasp the iron rod, and not not let go.”

Is that true?  We all have hard times.  We all have times of trial where incredible faith is needed.  Sometimes isn’t hard to remember to keep holding on, but we have to remember it’s the only way through tough trials.

Hold On_Michael McLean Tribute-1

Michael McLean is a wonderful artist.  I have always loved listening to his unique style and powerful words.  This music is a perfect tribute to him by various artists.  They’ve compiled some of Michael McLean’s greatest songs and they’re redone by other wonderful artists who love and admire Michael McLean.  We love to listen to this in the car.  It keeps the kids interested, and quiet (lol, that’s hard when you’ve got 6 kids) while I ponder the lyrics and let them sink in.  It’s a great CD to add to your collection of music.

Witch and Goblin Halloween Treat

Holidays are magical with little kids.  I feel like Halloween is really the start of the holiday season, and getting the kids involved in activities and making goodies has become a MUST at our house.  The kids and I came up with an idea to make a pumpkin patch and I had a vision of what I wanted it to look like to make it even more festive.  These would be perfect as an after school activity with the kids, or even for a party!

The kids and I headed to Walmart to grab the necessities.  Here is what you’ll need to make Witch and Goblin Halloween treats:

The OREOs and Fanta were pretty easy to find.  Fanta was in the soft drink section.  There were cans I almost bought too, so the kids could make their own drink, but decided against that.  But that might be a perfect solution for a party.

The OREOs were actually right as I walked into the store.  However, I found some more right with the Halloween candy!  So make sure to check there.

Witches Graveyard:

*OREO glow in the dark package (these come as packages of 2 OREOs, which I LOVE because then I just gave each of the kids a package, and they could help make 2 at a time, and it wasn’t overwhelming – plus they glow in the DARK!  They were in love with that.).
*Green Chocolate Melt
*Pumpkin candies
*Witch cupcake toppersOREO Graveyard

  1. First you’ll want to hold the OREO package up to the light, then take it into a dark room, and see how awesome it is when they glow in the dark.  After seeing how great it is, get ready for a graveyard.  😉  Here is the package that has the 2 OREOs in it.  I held it to the light.OReo

Like MAGIC … it was glowing SO well!  These would be so fun to pass out on Halloween.  They’re just fun to stand in your pantry with and admire too.  Lol.Glowing-Oreo

  • You’ll want to cut some pumpkin candies in half and make sure those are ready first.
  • Melt the chocolate 30 seconds at a time, or just by following the package directions.
  • Once the chocolate is melted you’ll take your OREO and dip the top of the OREO into the melted chocolate.
  • While the chocolate is still wet, you can place a pumpkin in the middle.Pumpkin-Patch
  • To create a witch crashing a pumpkin, put half a pumpkin on the dipped cookie, then the witch, then the other half of the pumpkin.  The pumpkin will act as book ends to keep the witch in place.Witch-by-kids
  • Let chocolate harden and cool, then enjoy!  Witch-Crash-kids
  • Always make sure to appreciate the imperfections too.  🙂  My kids loved it and were so proud of their creations even though they weren’t perfect.  That’s what makes it awesome!Witch-Kids-Crash

Goblin Freeze and Juice:

*Fanta Orange Soda
*Vanilla ice cream
*Straws/spoons & cupsGoblin-Juice-Recipe

Goblin Freeze:

  1. Pour Fanta Orange soda into an ice cream maker for 20 minutes.  The amount will depend on how big your ice cream maker is.
  2. Once the Fanta Orange soda is starting to resemble a freeze drink, alternate scooping vanilla ice cream, and the Fanta into the cup.

Goblin Juice:

  1. Fill cup about half way with Fanta Orange Soda.
  2. Scoop 2 medium sized scoops of vanilla ice cream into the cup.
  3. Take a large spoon, and smash the ice cream around until it’s almost melted, or just falling apart.
  4. It should be thicker than the soda with melted ice cream, it should be the consistency of soft serve ice cream.  So add a little ice cream or Fanta, depending on your drink.Witch Graveyard and

The kids and I drank this all up!  It was super yummy!  I didn’t get any pictures of it because we were too busy drinking away … lol.  It’s so fun and easy, and slightly different than a typical float, which makes it fun for a Halloween party and just a fun and different snack!

What are your families favorite #spookysnacks for Halloween?  Need some ideas?!?  Come check out some more here.

Make sure to check out Evette Rios, host of the CBS show Recipe Rehab, she will be creating a custom Walmart-exclusive recipe that uses both Fanta and OREO.  It will be shown on the #SpookySnacks social hub. It’s always fun to get new holiday treat ideas!

Date night in …

August 17, 2015

Dinner and a movie is such a clique date night isn’t it?  For us, going on a date, even if the actual activity is totally free, is still so expensive once we figure in paying the babysitter.  One of our favorite date nights is to get a movie, pick up dinner from one of our favorite local restaurants and bring it home and watch a movie and enjoy dinner at home, once the kids are in bed.

Recently we took an evening and watched Freetown.  Have you heard of this movie?  It’s incredible.  Here is the synopsis:
Caught in the middle of a brutal civil war, six Liberian missionaries in Monrovia flee the widespread violence in their native country. Their destination: Freetown, Sierra Leone. With the help of local church member Phillip Abubakar (Henry Adofo), the missionaries make the difficult journey, only to have their troubles compounded by a rebel fighter bent on killing one of their own. Based on incredible true events, FREETOWN is a thrilling and inspiring story of faith, hope and survival.

Freetown DVD

The faith that these 6 missionary show along with their driver and friend is incredible.  I’m always amazed when I see movies like this where it’s based on a true story and to see these people go through something with such grace and such faith is always building for me in my life.  We all have hard things that we go through, and its’ a great reminder to have faith, and move forward towards our goals and to our desires, and we will be blessed, and we will be lead to the end where we need to be.

I’m so excited to be giving away TWO copies of Freetown.  So enter below for the chance to win you own DVD and see and own this amazing movie.

Ice-Cream-Cone-Parfait by Simplistically Sassy

I went to Walmart by myself the other day (I know, I was just as shocked as you are now that I didn’t have any of my 6 kids with me!  My husband is a rock star like that though), and met these adorable ladies!  They were passing out Blue Bunny vanilla ice cream with peaches.  Hello yummy!  I stopped and chatted for a moment (because, again, I was there alone and so I could) and they really were super nice.  Not to mention the ice cream was amazing!  Good company, good food.

I headed over to the ice cream section and found this giant selection of Blue Bunny ice cream.  Ice Cream Cone Parfait

I grabbed some chocolate and vanilla.  If you’ve been around my blog you know my family is totally split about vanilla and chocolate, so I wanted options for everyone.

I headed home with some ice cream, mini ice cream cones (also from Blue Bunny) and some strawberries and peaches.Ice-Cream-Cone-Parfait-Recipe by Simplistically Sassy

During the summer when I have all six kids at home, I love to include the kids whenever I can, especially when it comes to making fun treats!  My oldest was up for holding my phone while we did a time-lapse video of how to make these ice cream cone parfaits.

These turned our super, super yummy.  I preferred the chocolate and strawberry.  I used the chocolate mini cones, chocolate ice cream and strawberries.  Amazing!  Ice Cream Cone Parfait by Simplistically Sassy

The peaches and cream also turned out great.  I used the vanilla mini cones, vanilla ice cream, and fresh peaches.  I loved the slight added chocolate from the mini cone, but even without that, it would have been wonderful!

These are going to be a new family favorite. I love how simple they are that even some of my older kids could do these by themselves, or come up with new combos!

Grace is Amazing

March 30, 2015

Have you ever been unsure about a book, and then read it and fallen in LOVE with it?  I feel like that doesn’t happen very often for me, but as I read Sheri Dew’s new book Amazed by Grace I couldn’t put it down.Amazed by Grace-March 2015

Amazed by Grace isn’t a long book, but it’s a powerful one.  Sister Dew gave me profound insight that I’d never heard before.  I have alway felt so unsure about the word GRACE.  What is grace exactly?  How is it applicable to me?  How do I need to be using grace in my own day to day life?  How is grace manifested in my life? arthritis  I felt like this book, 100% cleared up all those questions in a simple, straight forward way.

I don’t often read books a second time, but I am positive that this book will become a treasure in my life that will become worn and used.  It is a perfect reminder of the love that our Savior Jesus Christ has for each of us.  It is a perfect reminder of HOW our Savior shows us His love all the time.  I hope you’ll take the chance to read this sweet, sweet book.  I’m so grateful that I did.  It really has given me awesome perspective.

Yesterday, Today and Forever

March 23, 2015

I’ve been really thoughtful lately about how to better my blog, and how to really help other people through my blog.  I think posting fun ideas is great, but I want this to be a space that can help lift and inspire other people.

I’ve had the opportunity to read a new book called,Yesterday, Today, and Forever by Elder M. Russell Ballard.  I have loved this book more than I even expected to.  I’ve really needed some of the words that he talks about and I have felt genuinely inspired to go in certain directions with certain aspects of my life.

Yesterday, Today, and Forever-March 2015

I have also just been uplifted and felt the love the Lord has for me as I’ve read.  I think sometimes we all need that reminder.  We need to know we’re loved and remembered and that someone is there that understand and knows us.  It’s nice to be reminded.  Sometimes as a mom I feel like everything I do around the house and for the kids is just automatically expected of me, and no one really notices or cares if it gets done (although, they would if it DIDN’T get done, lol).  Sometimes picking up the scriptures or an inspiring book and reading words that touch our hearts and our spirits is just what we need to keep moving, to keep going and to keep doing the dishes, the laundry, and making dinner that no one likes (again!).

Elder Ballard says: “Now, finally, I turn again to you dear sisters, you who have such a profound, innate spiritual ability to hear the voice of the Good Shepard.  I pray that you will sleeping aids never wonder again if you have worth in the sight of the Lord and to those He has called to preside in the Church for a season.  We love.  We cherish you.  We respect you.  We need you.  We want you to anticipate fully in the work of salvation.”  He goes on to say, “More than ever before we need women of faith, virtue, vision, and charity, as the Relief Society declaration proclaims.  We need women who can hear and will respond to the voice of the Lord, women who at all costs will defend and protect the family and the Church.  We need women who rejoice in their womanhood and have a spiritual confirmation of their identity, their value, and their eternal destiny.  Above all, we need women who will stand up for truth and righteousness, decry evil at every turn, and simply say, ‘Lord, here am I, send me.'”

I found those words so powerful!  Am I doing that?  If I am, how?!?  What more can I do to be a woman in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who can help life and inspire others?  How can I better share my testimony and the gospel?  What am I doing daily to reach those goals and strengthen various aspects of my life that need strengthening?

The entire book is filled with various topics and discussion and words of wonderful wisdom.  I hope you’ll take time to read this book.  It really is wonderful and so helpful in bringing us closer to the Lord in the various ways that we all need.
