What Holiday Birthdays are REALLY like

Holiday Birthday by Simplistically Sassy

Have you ever wondered what it’s really like to have your birthday on the same day as a major December holiday (or for that matter, the same week as the major December holiday’s).  Well, this week is my birthday, and I have decided to share with you all, what it’s really like to have a birthday on New Years Eve.

As a Disclaimer – my mother would like you all to know that I chose my own birthday, so the awesomeness that follows was all my choice.  I’ll also have you know that the doctor that spend his New Years Eve with me, was able to still make it to his party that night.

The week of Christmas I have a brother-in-law, nephew, sister-in-law, husband, niece, and myself all with birthday’s between December 23rd and December 31st.  I also have a sister-in-law with a birthday earlier in the month.  We’re all pretty spread out though, so we don’t really do anything for everyones birthdays.  However, my nephew and my niece that have birthdays that week are brother and sister, and their mom has the earlier December birthday.  So, it’s a crazy month for them.

So, as a New Years Eve birthday I’d like to relate the top 5 things that happen because my birthday is near Christmas/New Years.

5. Friends love to combine Christmas/Birthday gifts.  This isn’t necessarily a big deal, and I can totally see why they do it … but honestly, when I give a birthday gift to my July birthday friend, and a Christmas gift in December, it’s annoying when things are gifted together.  This was much more of a thing when I was growing up rather than now – now I wouldn’t really care.  If your child is giving out Christmas gifts to a friend with a December birthday – don’t combine the two.

4.  Never being able to have a party on the actual day.  Ever.  People always have New Years Eve plans, or are gone for the Christmas holiday. Or it’s a family type of night.
I remember when I was about 10 really wanting to have a party, and realizing that it couldn’t happen, and being SO bummed out.
As an adult it’s harder to celebrate with friends since we’ve all spend money on Christmas, and everyone is on a tighter budget.

3.  People just completely forget about your birthday.  Yep … it’s true.  I’ve even had close friends just forget.  It’s a much bigger deal when you’re younger.  It’s still not awesome though.

2.  Not being able to go out and celebrate.  I feel like this one is super specific to my birthday.  As an adult, we’ve never gone out to dinner on my birthday.  On New Years Eve you have to make reservations for anywhere half nice, and then if we did it’d be SO crowded that I don’t feel like it’d be worth it.  We have done lunch though.  But sometimes, it’d be nice to go out to dinner on my birthday.

1.  Never having school on your birthday.  As a kid this was for sure the best part.  Of course, in elementary school it’s fun for a few years to have school and things, but it’s always been a major plus.

Do you have a holiday Birthday??  What can you relate to, or what would you add to the list that is awesome, or junky about having to share with the major December holiday’s?

Birthday Cards for Kids by Simplistically Sassy

With birthday’s and Holiday’s around these parts require a lot of planning – ahead of time.  All six of my kids have a birthday in a different month, and my husband and I have our birthdays in the same month, but it’s a different month than any of our kids.  So, 7 out of 12 months we have a birthday in our family.  Those 7 months are almost consecutive.  Which makes for lots of parties, cake, and planning in what seems like endless amounts.  I was so excited when I saw these adorable birthday cards for kids at Walmart that were more than a card!  The awesome thing is if you buy 5 cards from Walmart, you’ll be able to earn Hallmark Card Rewards.  You can sign up here to start earning those rewards.

I’m rarely prepared for birthday’s with cards.  I love giving cards, but after all the other planning it often ends up being over looked.  I decided this year to get our birthday season off to a good started, and I stalked up on these amazing poster birthday cards for my kids.  They have an awesome variety of cards that I was able to find one for all my kids.  I also love that the cards have good messages for the kids!  They can be reminded and inspired as they remember the love that was given to them.

I also love that these are a great price, and would be awesome for the kids to give to friends as well.  That’d be another option to stalk up on these great cards, and grab some candy bars, and give an easy gift of a fun poster, and a little treat.  Easy to grab and go, and store for those last minute gifts you may forget about.Birthday Cards for Kids by Simplistically Sassy

Our birthday season starts the very beginning of November and goes through July – our months off are February and April.  So, it’s time to bring it on.  Birthdays, celebrations, holiday’s, and lots and lots of fun.  I’m so excited to see my kids reactions with these full size posters and they celebrate their special days, and also get to have an awesome message hanging in their room.Birthday Cards for Kids by Simplistically Sassy

Ice Cream Birthday Party

August 21, 2014

Ice Cream Birthday Party by Simplistically SassyWe recently celebrated my baby’s second birthday with an ice cream birthday party.  That basically means, I don’t have a baby any more … I have a toddler and she’s totally becoming a spunky, sweet little girl.  We had a blast celebrating.

My cute girl loves ice cream and I thought it would be a super fun way to celebrate her birthday. We all loved how this ice cream birthday party turned out, and had such a great time.

Of course the star of the birthday was this sweet little girl.  I’m so grateful she’s part of our family.  She is so loving and kind, and LOVES to play with her siblings.  She makes us all laugh, and she’s always quick to try new things if it means she gets to be with the other kids.  I feel like she’s such a blessing in our family, and I’m so glad that she’s mine.  Emma Jane

Well, first and for most, if you’re going to have an Ice Cream Birthday Party, you better have some amazing ice cream options.  I decided I really wanted to have homemade ice cream.  So we went with it.  This was done in advance so that the ice cream could harden a little more, and so we could make 3 batches before party day.  🙂  We made vanilla, chocolate, and raspberry.  It ended up being perfect for the party, and of course it tasted amazing!!  Ice Cream Birthday Party

Of course, if we’re having an ice cream party we needed toppings!!!  We had little marshmallows, crushed up Cookies and Cream Hershey bar, chopped chocolate Hershey bar, sprinkles, crushed Oreo, crushed nuts, and chopped Snickers. Ice Cream Birthday Party Toppings

The next thing that was a must would be waffle cones, and I LOVE waffle bowls.  I loved these tiny little waffle bowls.  They were the perfect size.  We also had regular bowls for those that didn’t want a waffle cone or bowl.  🙂     Ice Cream Birthday Party Cones

I also wanted to have the options of some syrup toppings, and of course whipped cream.  Ice Cream Birthday Party Toppings

I also wanted to have beverage options.  We had milk, and then also some water bottles (with a Sharpie marker hidden from kids, but handy for parents to write names on cups and/or water bottles).Ice Cream Birthday Party Water

I also wanted to have some games at the party.  We were having quite a few kids there.  My kids came up with the idea of Pin the Toppings on the Ice Cream Cone.  I had a poster board and drew a giant ice cream cone, and then I let the kids draw the toppings.  It was perfect.  I loved the toppings that my 7 year old came up with and drew.  She did a great job.Pin the toppings

I also created a coloring page and as the guests arrived they got to color a page.  Then we hung them up on the wall so everyone could see them through the party.Kids coloring

I think everyone had a great time.  My sweet birthday girl had so much fun.  She had some of her favorite people there to celebrate with us, and I’m so grateful that they came.  Happy Birthday baby girl!!  Thanks for bringing so much fun and light into our family.  Love you!Birthday girl
